The grade of the wood contains sapwood and prominent colour variation, small burls, light brown streaks, restored minor knots, filled checks, worm holes and slight imperfections in face work (torn open grain). When stained a dark colour, surface appears uniform in shade and texture, making knots, etc. barely discernible.
